So What Causes Belly Fat To Head Like A Rocket To the Stomach Area?

There are a ton of belly fat culprits out there. Whether it’s your daily indulgence or that extra glass of wine with the girls, everything from age to stress to lifestyle can affect the size of your middle.

Gaining weight around your midsection can become more prevalent as you age. Perimenopausal and menopausal women both experience greater weight gain in their abdomen as their bodies try to combat reduced estrogen levels with belly fat.

Fun fact, your body does this because that’s its ironic way of creating more estrogen. Fantastic, right?

Other factors such as high cortisol and other hormone imbalances can also increase your belly’s girth and contribute to unwanted health problems. From diabetes to heart issues, the bigger your belly, the more at-risk you’ll become.

And they say that these are the golden years. Pfft.

So, how exactly does menopause increase stomach fat?

Does Menopause Cause Belly Fat?

Menopause is the culprit of a ton of unwanted issues. From a slower metabolism to insomnia, menopause can cause your system to work against you.

With more aches and pains as we age, our physical activity starts to decrease, causing reduced fat burning and more instances of muffin-top.

Terrific news, right? As if we don’t have enough on our plates.

As the amount of fat on your tummy increases, your body will also begin to pump out higher levels of cortisol. Cortisol won’t just hinder your weight loss, but it can increase your susceptibility to weight gain, making it difficult to shed those unwanted pounds.

Basically, menopause creates a vicious cycle of aging, weight gain, and mixed body signals that can all create serious health issues.

So, what is cortisol and how can you combat it?

Which Hormones Cause Stomach Weight Gain?

Cortisol is a hormone that is most commonly activated during stressful situations. Even seemingly non-stressful situations like a lack of sleep can increase cortisol production in your body.

Ironically, menopause can cause insomnia, so getting a good night’s sleep may be easier said than done.

Over exercising and general stress {which we have a lot of at midlife} also increases Cortisol.

Cortisol is responsible for a lot of things, such as mood and memory, but it’s most commonly responsible for unwanted weight gain and cravings. While it may not seem like a big deal now, it can have detrimental impacts on your future health.

Added weight around the middle can increase your cortisol levels. These levels trick your body into producing more insulin. Increased insulin production will make you want to eat more. If you’ve noticed increased cravings, cortisol is likely your culprit.

The cycle just continues as one factor continues to influence another negatively.

While you might try to combat weight gain with increased exercise, even that can send a stress signal to your body. The new activity levels can mask themselves as stressors and tell your body to start churning out even more cortisol.

How can you win?

Since cortisol increases body fat and is responsible for higher instances of high-risk health issues, you’ll want to combat it quickly with some important lifestyle changes.

So, how do you start improving your health and fighting belly fat when so many things are working against you? Start with your diet and follow a weight loss plan.

The Best Diet for Weight Loss During Menopause

It’s the dreaded D-word. Diet. No one wants to hear it, but everyone needs to do it! Solving your problematic belly fat is easy when you tackle it proactively.

Don’t do yo-yo diets or over-exercise.

With strategic action, you can get your body back to better than ever.

From making the effort to get a good night’s sleep to cutting down on that extra glass of wine at dinner, making small changes to your daily habits can help you shed those unwanted pounds without drastically changing your life.

What Gets Rid of Belly Fat During Menopause?

To get rid of belly fat during menopause, you should start with the simple things.

Get Rid of Stress

Reduce your stress by avoiding traps like overworking and procrastination. Plan out your day, stick to your schedule, and make time for meaningful personal activities.

Don’t Over Exercise

As I’ve said before, over-exercising can have an adverse effect on your weight loss by increasing cortisol levels in your body. The best exercise is walking in nature. It is gentle on your body but will give your metabolism a boost. It also has the added benefit of relaxing your mind and lowering your cortisol levels which help you to lose weight.

This post HOW WEIGHT LOSS WITHOUT EXERCISE IS ACTUALLY POSSIBLE [and even helps improve your menopause symptoms too]  explains in more detail.

Laugh out Loud

Find humorous things to laugh about. Laughter decreases your body’s cortisol levels and increases Oxytocin, the happy hormone. Oxytocin has positive effects on all your other hormones. Think of it as a mental workout that has actual weight loss effects.

Have a Healthy Diet

Stick to a healthy diet that’s built for midlife weight loss. Simple lifestyle changes can make all the difference. Intermittent fasting is great for losing Menopause weight. You need to know WHEN to eat as well as WHAT to eat.

What’s the Best Diet for Me?

Everyone’s unique, but a natural approach to weight loss is always best for your health. Conquering your midsection weight gain isn’t just about diet, it’s also about incorporating your diet into a weight loss plan that works with your lifestyle.
